A Teenager's Dream Car
B&W 2026 36/365
I figured today was as good a day as any to practice car photography.
This old Jaguar currently sit on the street out in front of our house. Our now sailor bought it this past summer with some of his high school graduation money. He got a really good deal, and got to enjoy driving it for several months. Then literally the week before he left for basic training it started having issues with the starter, battery/alternator, so unfortunately it hasn’t moved in a couple of months.
His original hope was that once he got to Pensacola (where he’ll be for a year or more) one of us might drive this car to him in Florida, then drive home.
I’ve done that drive several times. It’s not fun in the best of conditions, and with a car we don’t totally trust to keep running, it’s just not going to happen.
I have a feeling he’s just going to end up getting a different car and we’ll just end up selling this Jag for him.
Of course, this isn’t the first one of his cars we’ve had out in front of our house:
He owned this 1971 Jeep Wagoneer for a little over a year. It was given to him for free, and he put a lot of work into it. He got it to the point where he actually drove it back and forth to school a few times, but it was never a reliable daily driver.
He did good when he sold it though. Even not running, he still made a profit vs. the money of his own he had put into it during the repairs. The (never realized) dream was to get it fully restored, in which case it might sell for $20-25K.
Knowing him, I’m sure neither of these will be his last project car.
Your turn:
Do you have any good stories about a project car?
Til next time,
Todd

I was a teen in the late 1970s, and the cool dream cars were models such as Camaro Z28, Pontiac Firebirds, Mustangs. Although my ‘72 Chevy Nova wasn’t a cool, hot-rod, per se, (and it was olive green to boot), it was still my dream car.
What kind of Jaguar?
