We sometimes struggle to come up with good ideas for date nights. It’s mostly a me thing. I’m not a huge fan of sit-down restaurants, or bars for that matter. A comedy club on the other hand is usually something that goes pretty well for us.
We can go out to eat first, and then the show starts at 8pm.
Last night, instead of potentially fighting the Bisbee restaurant crowds, we stopped at the Texas Roadhouse just up the street. That part of the date night went very well.
We then did the 35 minute drive through the mountains over to this little comedy club in Bisbee called Chuckleheads. We had gone back in May to see Tanyalee Davis and had a great time; she was hilarious.
I don’t know if we were just tired last night (we get up around 5am, and yesterday was a “school day”), but sometimes it’s hard to recreate previously awesome experiences.
Don’t get me wrong, this comedy club is cool as hell. It’s just a little room with a bar and a stage, but the atmosphere is spot on.
Also, the drinks (for Kelly, not me, I was driving) were reasonably priced, and the bartender (who I’m pretty sure is also the owner) gave a pretty generous pour on the vodka and cranberries.
As for the comedy itself, maybe it was just that last time was so good, or we were more tied this time, but the show on this particular evening is not something we will likely be still taking about a month or two from now.
We enjoyed the opening acts. Matt Ziemak is the around the same age as my oldest son, and also still skateboards in his 30s. Perhaps it’s just because I could relate to some of his jokes, but I definitely got a few good laughs during his 10 minutes or so on the stage. The primary opening-act Tamale Rocks was also funny and relatable. Her jokes got some laughs, and she had good banter with the audience.
Unfortunately the headliner, Trish Smart was a bit of a dud for us. I will take my part of responsibility for it, in that I probably should have searched for and watched some Youtube or Instagram videos before I bought the tickets. We did have a few laughs during her time on stage. But for most of her long set, she struggled to resonate with the audience (who to be fair, was all 20+ years older than her). Also, although she was very open during her routine about her extensive drug use, on this particularly evening she might have been just a little too high already when she took the stage.
It’s fine though, we will definitely be going back to Chuckleheads again.
This is the chance you take with comedy (unless it’s someone famous that you’re very familiar with already).
Sometimes it’s up your alley, and sometimes it’s not.
