There are many great things about living here in southeast Arizona. Among them, every fall through spring on the 3rd Saturday of the month, Market On the Move comes to town.
Apparently there is quite a bit of stuff, especially fruits and vegetables that gets confiscated or otherwise sidetracked at the border crossings and would end up in landfills.
Instead, the organization saves this food and through a network of distribution sites (usually partnering with churches and other non-profits) gives away boxes of food for $10 donations.
Today it was strawberries, peppers, mangos and eggs … also chips, green beans, pears (that pretty much had to be eaten today due to their ripeness) and even some tangerine drinks that I’d never tried before (Topo-Chico).
In that past, there was one month where we got a whole lot of tomatoes, onions, and peppers. I think we still have a jar or two of the salsa we made.
Oh yea, did I mention the “free entertainment”?
When you first arrive (ideally 30-45 minutes before it opens), you get to watch mostly old people like me attempt the apparently fungible skill of backing into parking spaces.
Seriously, it’s shocking the number of people who just give up and pull in forward, or more commonly, leave an entire space between cars because they’re not comfortable backing in that close to another car.
I should bring the teens one month to see this, so they don’t feel so singled out when they have trouble backing in.
Do you have any kind of great deals like this where you live?
Well, I think that’s about what I’ve got for today. Time to go try to find the Saturday balance between being somewhat productive and relaxing.
Til next time,
Todd
