I did not know I was going to take this picture. I didn’t know I was going to have my camera in the car with a fast lens attached. Heck, I didn’t even know I was going to this event.
I only found out after work that Kelly’s son and his friend had been at this DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) workshop all day, and the awards ceremony would be taking place in the afternoon before he needed to be picked up. I had the camera in the car, so figured I’d go get some pictures.
I got some good, fun pictures of her son and his friend. But of course I also took some pictures of the ceremony itself; and the other participants.
With this particular image, I’m not sure I could have gotten a better shot if I’d been given the task “go to this event and get a shot of the college president delivering his opening remarks” and tried to plan how to take it.
It was a little bit of random chance I had this angle and view anyway.
Originally I was sitting in the back. But then a few minutes before the ceremony started I had to give up my chair so all the students had a place to sit.
The spot I ended up standing turned out to be perfect.
So how about you?
Have you ever found yourself at an event with your camera and just started taking pictures well beyond what you had intended in the first place?
BTW, this has happened to me several times before, at more important events: The Accidental Wedding Photographer
Til next time,
