I’ll never forget the letdown the first time I visited the Grand Canyon. My partner and I had been traveling around the country for a couple of months and we approached the Grand Canyon from the north, driving through the heart of some amazing canyonlands, so I think I was a little desensitized. Standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon just seemed like more of the same.

I’ve since visited with Jennifer and enjoyed it a little more, though there are still dozens and dozens of national parks I would prioritize over the Grand Canyon.

Kelly kept telling me that the north rim is so much better ... but yes, even after we went out the east gate on hwy 64, I remember thinking that the "free" views weren't substantially less impressive than those in the park.

I think that might be where I got some of my favorite pictures, driving east on 64

We detoured to the south rim via the train from Williams during our trip along R66 in 2013. We have nothing like it in the UK and, quite honestly, no magazine or film could have prepared us for the scale or the spectacle. Another visitor told us that there's an even more spectacular canyonland in Mexico (Copper Canyon)...!!

I too have the disabled veteran pass and love it. It also gets you half off the camping fees in the park too. I normally camp there for 3 to 4 days in the Grand Canyon. It gives you time for the typical tourist stuff but also to hike more remote trails. So, it is still worth it in the end. Great pics, don't give up on the big parks just plan and stay longer.
